Hit Me With Your Best Shot: “Blow-Up” (1966)

For Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience: It had to be this shot. The shot where Vanessa Redgrave’s woman of mystery becomes truly mysterious. Why does she still have her shirt off when David Hemmings has told her she can put it back on? What does she actually want from him? Why is her private life “in a mess”? Redgrave makes you ask all of these questions and far more. She is both vulnerable and steely, nervous and commanding. She is a mover and dancer in the space that Michelangelo Antonioni has given her. What does it all mean? It means Redgrave at 29 with dark hair defiantly staring at Hemmings and at us.
